John’s concern
John couldn’t get rid of the thought that something important was being missed. Max was never more than a step behind Emily as he observed her going about her day. As he paced the living room, he thought, “I just know we’re missing something.” Despite Emily’s efforts to soothe him, he continued to trust his instinct. Max thought of his unwavering watchfulness. John, who was determined to look everywhere, informed Emily, “We need to keep digging.”

Max remained at Emily’s side as she passed out in the kitchen one day. When John hurried in after hearing a crash, he discovered Emily sprawled on the ground with Max whimpering and giving her a gentle prod. “Emily!” Panic rushing through him, John yelled. He knelt next to her and gave her a gentle shake. “Awaken!” As Emily gradually came to, her eyes fluttering wide, Max’s worried barks reverberated all around them. “What took place?” Weakly, she inquired.
