Nervous fingers
I observed Dad’s fingers tapping uneasily on the table’s edge. Every tap seemed to reflect the uneasiness we both experienced. He kept glancing around the room as if searching the flickering lights for answers. “Dad, what’s actually happening?” I finally broke the uncomfortable silence by asking. We waited, uncertain of what he might say next, but as usual, there were few direct replies.

Dad started talking about finances and plans for the future. “You should consider the legacy of the family,” he remarked, raising his voice a little. As he babbled, I experienced a range of emotions, from confusion to frustration. My spouse kindly suggested, “Let’s not get into this now,” in an attempt to refocus the topic. However, it was obvious that Dad had more to say, so we waited anxiously.
