Chewbacca Unmasked

In The Force Awakens, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford all reprised their legendary roles, as did Peter Mayhew. However, for The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story, he shared the duty with Joonas Suotamo until giving the baton totally to him. Mayhew’s last solo appearance as our beloved enormous walking carpet, Chewbacca, was in Revenge of the Sith.

He’s half-dressed as Chewie here, replete with thick, dark eyeliner to ensure the Wookie mask fits snuggly over his entire face. Mayhew is mentoring Suotamo along the road, so the character is in good hands, but fans will remember Mayhew and his piercing blue eyes for another forty years.

Kenny Baker As R2-D2

Many great celebrities passed away in 2016, including Carrie Fisher and Kenny Baker, two beloved Star Wars alumni. Baker had initially declined the job of R2-D2, but volunteered to play the character as a favor to Lucas, bringing one of the most iconic robots in cinematic history to life. Despite the fact that Artoo is constructed of wires and metal plates, Baker gave Luke’s faithful companion complexity and even a sense of compassion.

In The Force Awakens, Baker repeated the position and was listed as a consultant for Artoo, with Jimmy Vee performing some of the work under Baker’s supervision. For The Last Jedi and Episode IX, Vee has fully assumed the job.
