On a basketball scholarship, Selleck attended the University of Southern California. He also worked as a model on the side. He was enrolled in a Business Administration program, but his theatre teacher encouraged him to attempt acting instead. Fortunately, Selleck took the advice and studied acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse with Milton Katselas.

Surprisingly, he also spent time in the United States Army. He was assigned to the California Army National Guard’s 160th Infantry Regiment. Selleck has boasted about his service in the military, “I am a veteran, I’m proud of it. I was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, National Guard, Vietnam era. We’re all brothers and sisters in that sense.”
