With my heart racing, I carefully opened the letter and quickly perused its contents. My greatest worries were confirmed when they talked about gaining access to my trust. To what far would Tom go in order to seize what wasn’t his? Knowing that I would have to face this legally made me feel depressed as I attempted to collect my thoughts. Truth, however, would not allow me to compromise; I would have to resist Tom’s cunning strategies.

Each fragment and message came together piece by piece. I aligned all of our results like a detective laying out his case and said, “Jake, we’re onto something real.” Tom had been reckless enough to expose just enough. “Let’s go back to this.” His tracks were more distinct; I could sense it in the notes we had collected. We nearly figured out Tom’s strategy. Sooner rather than later, the period for observation would give way to action.
