The Toss
I paused a moment, holding on to the medical equipment. Throwing that equipment meant breaking the protection of the vehicle, which seemed like a bubble of safety. Jake, however, need it. “Here we go,” I said, mustering my bravery. I took a deep breath and threw it through the open window of the vehicle. It was a little yet important lifeline that sailed through the air. Watching my heart curve toward Jake, a lifeline in this developing drama, made my heart pound.

Jake scarcely broke stride as he caught the kit like a veteran. He knelt down and opened the kit with deft hands as he approached the lioness. He said, more to the lioness than to us, “All right, let’s see what you need.” Like he had done this a thousand times, his motions were delicate and exact. We temporarily forgot about our personal safety as we gazed in wonder as he got ready to inspect her. Now was the time for Jake and the lioness.
