They continued talking about their intentions to go shopping. “Just think of all the shopping we could do!” Emily laughed. With delight, Sarah continued, “I can’t wait to travel more.” I absorbed their entitlement as I laid there. It seemed unreal, like a nightmare. They sounded thrilled about items they didn’t yet own, like children in a candy store. Their glaring ignorance made me begin to consider how I would respond to this circumstance.

Each of their laughs like a knife in my heart, piercing the room. Anger and disbelief squeezed my chest. What else ought to be on our agenda? Sarah inquired, and they both burst out laughing once again. How they could discuss my money in such a way while I was in the adjacent room was difficult for me to understand.
