Dad sat back, listening intently to what Josh said. He appeared to be assembling a puzzle that had been hidden away in the shadows for an extended period of time. His intense concentration made it obvious that he would not let this go unsolved. My manager, meanwhile, sat there avoiding eye contact as the harsh reality began to bear heavily on him.

My manager shifted in his chair, writhing once again. With a hint of desperation in his voice, he clumsily vowed, “I can look into improvements.” It was like witnessing someone make a grandiose promise when all they had to offer was a string of meaningless platitudes. “If you give me time, I can turn things around.” Dad acknowledged him with a small nod, but he was not persuaded by the weak promises made.
