Cleaning the oven is one of the tasks that many people prefer to avoid. After cooking and baking, grease, burnt-on residue and dark stains are often left behind. The longer you wait, the more difficult it becomes to get everything clean again. Many people then immediately reach for strong oven cleaner. This can work, but it often smells very strong and is not always pleasant to use. That’s why many people look for simple household tricks that work with things they already have at home. One such trick sounds unusual at first: a dishwashing tab for the oven.
Dishwasher tabs are actually designed to remove grease and food residue from plates, pots and cutlery. This is exactly why they can also be helpful for stubborn dirt in the oven. With a little warm water, they can be turned into a simple cleaner that makes grease and burnt-on spots easier to remove. This trick is not always a substitute for thorough cleaning, but it can be a quick and inexpensive help if you want your oven to look fresher again.
How the dishwashing tab trick works
The reason why this trick is so popular is the effect of the tabs. Dishwasher tabs contain ingredients that are designed to dissolve grease, food residues and encrustations. This is exactly the kind of dirt that accumulates in the oven. All you need is a dishwashing tab, warm water, a sponge or cloth and preferably household gloves. First moisten the dirty areas in the oven with warm water.
You can then carefully rub the tab over burnt-on areas. The tab dissolves easily and distributes its cleaning agents over the surface. Leave everything to work for a few minutes to soften the grease and dirt. Then wipe with a damp sponge or cloth. Very important: At the end, wipe the stove thoroughly with clean water. No residue from the cleaner should remain in the oven, especially not where food will be reheated later.
What you should watch out for
Do not use this trick on sensitive surfaces if the manufacturer of your oven advises against it. If in doubt, check the operating instructions beforehand or test the method on a small, inconspicuous area and make sure the oven is switched off and has cooled down completely before you start cleaning. Do not use tabs together with other cleaning agents, as substances that do not belong together could mix. A milder variant may be sufficient for the oven door: Dissolve some of a tab in warm water and gently wipe the glass with it.
Then wipe thoroughly with clean water. The dishwashing tab trick is not a magic formula, but it can make cleaning much easier. It can help with grease stains and burnt-on residues in particular, without having to resort to expensive special cleaners straight away.
Sometimes the most practical solution is already in the kitchen.
